Bonnie Gordon was born in 1941 and majored in art whenever and wherever possible since 1944. After taking a BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University in 1962 she moved to New York City to work at graphic design, medical illustration and editorial illustration. Grove Press published Gordon’s satirical illustrations in Evergreen Review in 1968 and 1969 and she received a New York Society of Illustrators Award in 1970. After taking her MFA from RIT in Printmaking and Painting in 1970, Gordon joined the Design Faculty at Buffalo State College.
Visual Studies Workshop Press published Gordon’s books ‘The Anatomy of the Image Maps’ and “The Anatomy of Proteus’ in 1981 with a New York State Council for the Arts Individual Projects Grant. Gordon’s plastic ‘image/text project also received funding from New York State University Awards for Creative Projects in the Fine Arts in 1973 and 1978, from the New York State Public Service Program in 1975, the National Endowment for the Arts in 1977 and the New York State Foundation for the Arts Catalog Project in 2000.
Installations presenting and/or illustrating the history and/or anatomy of Gordon’s long-time ongoing project were shown at The New Museum in New York City in 1980 the Albright/Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo New York in 1989 and 2002, the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University in 1993, at CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, New York in 1993, and at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester New York in 1979, 1992 and 2005.
Gordon’s work is included in the Museum of Modern Art Photography Collection in New York City, the Princeton University Photography Collection in Princeton, New Jersey, the Everson Museum Collection in Syracuse, New York, the George Eastman House Museum of Photography in Rochester, New York, and The Center for Creative Photography at Arizona State University in Tucson, Arizona.
