Education
Visual Studies Workshop was founded to develop a non-profit educational program for photography and the media arts and we have been committed to this mission since 1969. VSW offers skill-developing, continuing education courses in our Evening & Weekend and Summer Institute programs. Local, national and internationally recognized artists teach workshops ranging from historical and alternative processes, to up-to-date digital processes in media arts production. In addition to skill-based workshops, we routinely provide seminar courses on contemporary issues surrounding the media arts taught by recognized scholars and thinkers on photography, film and video, and visual books. Our Community Workshops also provide community outreach services and teaching opportunities for artists and educators. VSW hosts free lectures and screening events by artists and thinkers for the public monthly. As a partner of the VASA Project we also support online media arts workshops.
VSW offers accredited courses through a 25-year relationship with The College at Brockport, State University of New York. Introductory and advanced undergraduate courses are available every fall and spring semesters. Our most prominent education program is the SUNY Brockport MFA in Visual Studies at VSW. Over 90% of VSW’s MFA alumni work in Visual Studies related fields. Many have gone on to very prominent positions and curators, arts administrators, educators, and artists.
