2013 VSW Auction
Friday, April 12, 2013, 6-9PM
Tickets are $20.00 at the door

The VSW Auction benefits the artist support programs at Visual Studies Workshop. Over 150 artists and alumni of VSW’s MFA program generously donated photographs, prints and books for every collector’s budget. Those who donated works may elect to have a percentage go back to them directly. Purchasing a print or book through this annual benefit is one way you can support opportunities for artists to exhibit, publish, and continue their education.

Bidding at the silent auction begins at 6PM in Visual Studies Workshop’s Auditorium, 31 Prince Street, Rochester, NY. Bidding ends at 9PM. If you are unable to attend the auction, a proxy bidder can be provided for you. Proxy bidders will take your maximum bid for one or more pieces you identified here online. At your request, proxy bidders can be on the phone with you the night of the auction to manage your bids. To make arrangements for a proxy bidder, contact Tate Shaw, tateshaw@vsw.org

Follow @VSWAuction on Twitter for exciting updates regarding the auction!

Online Preview: The images below were submitted by donating artists. Clicking on an image will enlarge it and clicking on it again will return it to a thumbnail. To read the bio submitted by the donating artists, click on the name in red to the left of thumbnails for each auction item. From April 8-11, 2013 if you have questions about the condition of a print or book you can email Juliana Muniz, jmuniz@vsw.org for more information.

Kurt continues to teach photography when he is not too busy maintaining his own artistic career. “Art in Residence: West Coast Artists In Their Space” was Kurt’s first book published in 2000. It features portraits of seventy-four influential West Coast artists, including Ansel Adams, Nathan Oliveira, Jock Sturges, Robert Arneson, Judy Chicago, and more. Joseph D. Jachna

I am Chicago-born, went to a catholic parochial elementary school, and Chicago Vocational High School where I majored in radio and electronics. Much of the West Pullman neighborhood we lived in was prairie. There was also a small farm with a pond. Along the Calumet river was forest preserve land, a private golf course and a private woods owned by Acme steel where my dad worked. My earliest memory of true nature was in that woods where I quietly parted some cattail reeds to see ducks on a small pond. I went to these places a lot, on foot and bicycle, and when my hobby, photography, replaced my high school career choice I photographed there a lot. My BS is in Art Education from the Institute of Design (ID) at IIT, though I took photography courses with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind all through, also with Frederick Sommer the year he replaced Siskind on leave. To become a photographer I spent three years doing that WATER project with Siskind as my primary advisor. I taught photography at ID under Aaron Siskind for eight years and for 32 years in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). My photographs are in the collections of, and have been exhibited at, The Art Institute, The Museum of Contemporary Art and Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago; The Museum of Modern Art in NYC; George Eastman House / International Museum of Photography in Rochester NY; Center for Creative Photography in Tucson AZ; California Museum of Photography, San Francisco Museum of modern Art and Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California; Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis MN; the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan. An exhibition from the Hallmark Collection toured the US accompanied by a large book/catalogue. Many private collections included David Ruttenberg’s in Chicago. (See Who’s Who in American Art or The Index to American Photographic Collections.) Heidi Kumao

Emerging from the intersection of sculpture, theater and engineering, Heidi Kumao’s installations, experimental films, and machine art works generate artistic spectacle in order to explore the psychological underpinnings of everyday situations.  Each work restages simple behaviors (e.g. gardening, writing, standing upright, reading) within a larger cultural construct (such as a prison, family/home or traditional gender roles) through projection, kinetic elements or electronics. Through these performative tableaus and hybrid art forms, Kumao demonstrates how small gestures, even the most private and poetic, can become acts of defiance. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Canada including solo shows at the Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo), Museu de Arte Moderne (Buenos Aires) and Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. Group exhibitions include SIGGRAPH 2011 (Vancouver), Wing Luke Asian Art Museum (Seattle), and Usina do Gasômetro Cultural Center (Porto Alegre, Brazil).  She has been awarded numerous national fellowships, grants, residencies and awards including: a Guggenheim Fellowship, an AAUW Post-doctoral Fellowship, a Creative Capital Grant in Emerging Fields/Robotics, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and Art Matters (NYC). Heidi Kumao is an Associate Professor in the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she teaches a range of classes in media, time-based art forms, and conceptual art practice.

Eric Daniel Le Roy

Eric Daniel Le Roy is a 2007 graduate of the Visual Studies Workshop and is currently working for the Rochester City School District. His work is often considered esoteric and puzzling but through closer examination one will discover the “rules” of the game. He is currently working on a series of hex and binary code images based on photographs he captured during a trip to Paris in 2011. He describes his process as one of “looking behind the image while restoring the presence of both the mechanical and the manual source of production”. By reducing these digital images to their basic “code” he is blurring the divide between the real and what we imagine to be real. Eric lives and works in Rochester, NY and remains active in the local, national and international arts community. You can contact Eric and view more of his work at www.eric-daniel.com.
