| A Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Studies is offered through a joint program with the State University College at Brockport, incorporating studies in history, theory, and criticism with an emphasis on studio practice in photography, visual books, film/video and digital media. Semester-long Evening Classes, Summer Workshops and Weekend Workshops are scheduled on a continuing basis. Lectures and screenings are also open to the public. A recently rennovated 250 seat auditorium is becoming a popular venue for performing arts groups and special events. Within walking distance of the Visual Studies Workshop is an important complex of cultural resources including the Memorial Art Gallery, the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Writers and Books, the Eastman School of Music, the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum and the School of the Arts The Visual Studies Workshop is supported, in part, by grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Monroe County, the Andrea Frank Foundation, JC Morgan Chase, the Nimoy Foundation, and private contributions.

The Visual Studies Workshop is committed to expanding the potential of the media arts, and their impact on visual culture, through innovative programs in education, research, production and community service. We are an internationally recognized center for media studies, including photography, visual books, digital imaging, film and video, located in two historic buildings, comprising 44,000 feet of space in Rochester's museum and cultural district. We serves visual artists and the general public with diversified programming in education and exhibitions. Afterimage, the journal of media arts and cultural criticism, is published by VSW, as well as an extensive series of artists' books. Artists residencies, access programs, and internships make the facilities available for the production of artworks and for scholarly research in VSW's extensive archives and library. |
